HONK’s new homeowner, Gabrielle, has been putting in the hard work to make it to her closing for her first home. For example, she’s been building her career at Sam’s Club, earning her degree, taking on additional hours, and making intentional decisions about her future.
With her rent set to increase earlier this year, she wanted her monthly investment to go toward something of her own. And now, that dream is a reality. Gabrielle wrote us the following heartfelt note about her homebuying experience. She hopes that others will be inspired to see themselves achieve their dream of owning a home.
My rent at the apartment I was living in was about to skyrocket. I was so worried about where I was going to live. I have two dogs that I love more than anything, and I desperately wanted to provide them the life they deserve. The only thing I cared about was giving my dogs space to run and play.
When I first heard about HONK through my amazing counselor at The ION Center, it seemed almost too good to be true.
HONK exceeded my expectations. When Gina, the fantastic Housing Counselor with HONK, called me to tell me I had been accepted, it was like a dream come true.
I have worked so hard to be who and where I am today, and with HONK’s help, I was able to purchase my home in only six months.
Homeownership never seemed possible for me, but HONK made my dream a reality. I feel so blessed, and I thank everyone who supported and believed in me.
If I could say something to my younger self and anyone else who also feels hopeless, it would be this:
Never give up on yourself, always strive to be a better person than you were yesterday, and don’t ever forget you are worthy of creating the life you desire.
