How can I be a Returning Volunteer?
When can I volunteer in HONK construction?
HONK has returning volunteers that work one day a week, Monday through Thursday. If you’re not available during the week, a group of volunteers meets every 2nd Saturday of the month from 8 a.m. to noon.
Do I need to be skilled?
Absolutely not! HONK construction staff is accustomed to helping volunteers of all experience levels. If you are more handy, HONK staff will assign you more difficult tasks. To be one of HONK’s returning construction volunteers, you must be at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license.
What things do construction volunteers do?
HONK uses volunteers for nearly every aspect of the rehab. We subcontract HVAC, major electric, major plumbing, and roofing, but nearly every other task needed is fair game. HONK volunteers tackle things like demolition, rough framing, drywall hanging, finish carpentry, minor concrete work, painting, and more.
We need you!

HONK demolition is done by hand. Demolition is often done at HONK for a number of reasons, including:
The house is no longer serviceable.
The house’s structural integrity has been compromised.
The house needs to be refurbished to improve its value.
- Demolition is often a task assigned to groups or less experienced construction volunteers.
HONK rehabs foreclosed, abandoned, and often distressed houses. These homes come to HONK in various conditions- some require only minor repairs and a fresh coat of paint. Some end up being full gut rehabs that require much more renovation.
Sometimes, HONK has the opportunity to build a home from the ground up. These projects allow for HONK construction staff to streamline the process of home construction, and work around less obstacles as with rehabbing homes.
