Benedictine Sisters Celebrate 150 Years by Building
House of Blessing.
In 1859, the Benedictine Sisters of St. Walburg
Monastery found a home in the East Side of Covington
on 12th Street between Scott and Greenup. The
sisters have since relocated to their current
monastery in Villa Hills, but have chosen to
celebrate their 150th anniversary by helping to
provide a deserving family with a home just three
blocks away from their original motherhouse.
In order to achieve this goal, the sisters have
partnered with Housing Opportunities of Northern
Kentucky (HONK), which has been providing affordable
housing for Northern Kentucky families in need sine
1992.
The three-bedroom home at 332-334 Trevor Street
won’t mark the first time the Benedictine Sisters
have contributed to a HONK project, but it will
represent their most significant contribution to a
single home. Through fundraising efforts and by
providing links to favorable vendors who can supply
labor and material, the sisters plan to cover nearly
all of the $100,000 construction cost of the home
and have raised $84,000 to date.
HONK will serve as the general contractor and
construction manager of the project and also find a
family for the home from its program which provides
financial counseling services in an effort to
increase home ownership rates throughout Northern
Kentucky.
With a similar partnership currently taking place
with the Home Builders Association of Northern
Kentucky for a house on Corneal Street in Ludlow,
the Trevor Street home could serve as a model for
partnerships with other area companies and
organizations for future HONK homes.
Groundbreaking on the Trevor Street home is
scheduled to take place on October 3rd at 1:00 pm.
The groundbreaking will be attended by local and
regional officials in addition to local
personalities and companies involved in the
construction of the home. Completion of the House of
Blessing is targeted for July 11, 2009 to coincide
with the Feast of St. Benedict.
